The Native people of Vancouver Island have been knitting woolen (Cowichan) sweaters for well over a century. Canadian Sweater Company Ltd. has continued the tradition of these historic garments and has added many other designs and styles over the years. The basic designs adopted by our Company are derived from folk art of the Native Indians. The thunderbird, the eagle, the bear, the deer and the snowflake have been an integral part of Native mythology and day to day living. behind each design there is a legend that has been passed down through the ages. These distinctive symbols of nature give the handmade garments a unique British Columbia identity.
